Hi Joyce, My husband was diagnosed with IBM about four years ago after several unexplained falls, difficulty with getting up from chairs and general weakness. He saw an orthopedist because one fall damaged his kneecap, who sent him to a neurologist who ordered the muscle biopsy which gave us the diagnosis. We were relieved it wasn't ALS. He is now 57.We saw the MDA doctor in Denver who told us to prepare for the future by getting tools in place that Jim would probably need. He said park a walker in the corner; you'll be glad you have it. Also urged us to consider our housing for remodeling or moving if there are stairs....all pretty scary stuff....but he was right. We have remodeled our old (over 100 yrs) house and have everything he needs on the main floor.
He does have swallowing issues as well but I don't recall that slurring words has been a part of that. We have received GOOD solid help and information from OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS,PHYSICAL THERAPISTS SPEECH THERAPISTS, wound care specialists (for a bed sore on his ankle...dont ever get one of those!) Anyway, there are so many people with so many tools to help you both as things progress. The internet is a great resource, as is this site. I've found that the Doctors can't do much but these specialists for daily living will be invaluable. Find an OT and ask to see their catalogs of tools....you'll feel better when you can 'see' what's out there. If you don't understand what the Docs are telling you, keep asking till you do.The more you know, the better you'll feel. See my post on IBM board re: google.
Good luck to you both,
Diana (aka mighty spouse)
