Throat Problems
|
Have any of you ever had throat problems? Swallowing is difficult; the whole back of you mouth is red, your tongue burns when you eat something. But yet when you drink something warm - it is soothing to the throat, but yet still hard to swallow. I went to a new pulmonary doc today (Thurs) - he stated that he thought it was the DM disease affecting my lungs and throat. I am supposed to go in on Monday for a BI - swallowing various forms of liquids and solids to determine how the lungs/throat are reacting to each. Then on Tuesday I am supposed to take a breathing test. If it is this disease - then they will put me on yet another med. and put me back on methotrexate. Such fun huh???? Wish me luck and hope all of you are doing better each day. I pray and think of you often - so please accept my apology for not signing in often enough to keep up with each of you. If any of you wish to e-mail me personally:vicstev@aol.com Vickie

Thanks Karen for replying back - What exactly does Donnatal do for you???? I performed all the tests - but haven't spoken with the doctor about the results yet. I told him I would be coming out to Florida for a week's visit and that he could tell me when I got back. I wanted to go there and relax and have some fun - not worry about any medical problems if possible. So far, so good - I'm out here with Marge (my best friend - in Melborne Fl.) and having a blast!!!!!!! I have already looked at model homes, looked at various building sites (believe it or not the ones I really like are across the street from Marge/Walt's home!!!!)- over looking a small lake. Can you believe that!!!! Today we went to visit Margie (their daughter). It took four of us women to install an indoor/outdoor patio carpet into Margies patio room. Turned out pretty good - mind you!!!! I met Margie's neighbor - Kathy - she is a trip! She's originally from New York. I like her - you would too. While we were installing Margie's carpet - her father came over - he's quite nice. I liked him too. Tonite - Marge, Margie and I went to : Frankie and Gina's Wedding Dinner/Party - Youl would've gotten a kick out of it Mom! Total Italian wedding - Dinner/Champagne, wedding cake cutting ceremony, bouquet throw, garter belt throw, Preacher Faszule, a pregnant bridesmaid, mom/dad, in-laws, grandmoms, all the dance music you would normally have an Italian wedding, (Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Durante etc.) and of course you have to include the slutty ex-girlfriend (she was really great- constantly trying to get him-hug/kiss etc. One time they were under the "wedding party" table and one of each of their legs was out as if they were doing "it", I'm telling you it was a constant riot! You actually felt like you were at a "true" wedding party. I even got up and danced quite a few dances. Believe me when I tell you that I had taken 2 darvecets prior to going to this afair - because I know me well enough that I love dancing and would have been out there with/without the meds. I just hope I don't suffer too much tomorrow - oh well if I do I do and I wouldn't take one minute back! HA HA. Marge/Margie and I even did the "Chicken " dance at our table - mind you without getting out of our chairs - that was soooooo funny. I laughed soooo much tonight that I know my facial muscles will probably ache tomorrow. Well gotta go - get some sleep and plan for tomorrow's fun day.

Re: Throat Problems

Vickie, The swallowing problems seem to go along with DM. I found an article on the web about acid reflux and voice problems. When I mentioned it to my gastroenterologist he was not surprised. He said of course DM caused the acid reflux and the throat problems. There was a point about this time last year when I was having trouble swallowing anything. I was still months away from being diagnosed and was having trouble swallowing anything. The worst part was I had more trouble with liquids than I did solids.
My mouth is much better but things still don't taste right. I have a metallic taste in my mouth almost all of the time. I haven't figured out which medication causes it but it really doesn't make much difference. AT least for the time being I am not suffering with those horrible mouth ulcers that I had for months. I have fibrous tissue in my lungs from the DM and at times it hurts to yawn or take a deep breath. Before my diagnose I had both a swallowing test and a breathing test done. Both of them were borderline enough that they decided that it really wasn't a problem. When I saw my records later on I noticed that the technicain said I wasn't cooperative and that my weight had probably caused the problem. I hope I never run into her again I might have to pull out some of her hair. The worst part of this disease is having to put up with people who haven't a clue and really don't want to know. I am constantly surprised by how few people know what autoimmune even means. The scarey part is that includes far to many health care professionals. My step-daughter is a NeoNatal Nurse Practioner but I am constantly surprised how little she knows about basic nutrition and more ordinary health problems.
You might ask your doctor about Cellcept instead of Methotrexate. I hope you have a prescription plan because it is very expensive. It does seem to have a lot fewer side effects and hopefully fewer long term problems.
I hope you have a good experience with all of your tests. Hang in there, Mary Popp DM

Re: Re: Throat Problems
Hi Mary, since i was put on MS Contin I have had that nasty metallic taste in my mouth. Surfing the netI discovered that sour fruit jellies helped it and they worked fo me. I told the pain doctor who prescribed the drug and he had never heard of the side effect let alone the cure. as you say!!!! Hang in there. Mary

Mary, In 1996 when the doctor prescribed iron pills, I got that same metallic taste in my mouth. It was horrible; couldn't eat because I would toss it up :>) Jim

Re: Re: Throat Problems

Thank you for your reply - sounds as though you been there done that. Do you still have this problem or did it go away??? Or has it decreased in pain/aggravation??? Did they put you on any meds??? My pulmonary doc wants to put me on corti-steroids, but I had to laugh until I cried. He looked at me really funny and asked: Why are you laughing? I said: Doc, look at my one page list of nothing but medicines - do you really believe you can add yet another to my list???? And besides that I'm already on prednisone and have been since 1999. Today I take 10 mg daily - how much more do you want me to take or is this some other type of steroid???? Say this is what you say it is - the muscle disease - what is the cure??? Throat operation???? He replied : No, cure, just treatment - steroids. Hmmmmmmmmm?????? Anyway I completed the tests and should get the results when I return from my trip to Florida. I will be in Florida until 8 June. He said he would contact me if anything was serious enough. I'm out here with Marge (my best friend in Melborne Fl.) and having a blast!!!!!!!
