Posted by Helen ® , 2001/03/22, 15:28:12   Archive
Hi everyone, I'm not a new member, have just been away for a bit and wanted to post a message to Edith the other day and couldn't get on because I couldn't remember my password. I guess that'll teach me to write it down next time. I haven't written for a while because we've had several family mis-happenings that needed attention first. But thanks again for your warm welcome and I'll write again soon. Best wisehes to all and hope you're all enjoying the nice warm spring that is finally starting to pop up all over.

Sincerely,
Helen.

MAA Members: Increase in membership fee

Posted by RalphB ® , 2001/03/22, 11:46:43   Archive
It appears that the MAA has quietly raised its membership fee. When I renewed my membership in February of 2000, the fee was US$30. I renewed again in February of 2001, and the fee was US$40. A look on the Order Form page on the MAA web site ( https://www.myositis.org/realorders2.html) shows that the cost for a new membership or the renewal of an old one is now US$50.

While we all understand that costs do increase, it does seem hard to justify a 67% increase in the membership fee without some detailed explanation from someone at the MAA. This is especially true for those with high medical bills and/or on a fixed income. Where are the costs increasing? What is being done to contain those costs? Is there anything preventing the MAA from voluntarily posting an up-to-date financial statement on its web site?

Without such an explanation, it seems hard to justify the increase given that the level of service provided by the MAA has not increased, and has arguably decreased. The Outlook (and its sister publication for JDMS, JM Messenger) is a great resource, even if some of the information in it is dated by the time it gets to the membership. However, the KIT ("Keep In Touch") program does not have the momentum it once had - some non-MAA local support groups (such as Jim's group) are doing better than corresponding KIT groups. Also, the MAA web site is in serious need of a refreshening and updating - information about the 2001 annual conference is still not listed there (see http://www.myositis.org/conference2.html). In the business world, less than 7 months is often simply not enough lead time to plan such a trip, and that is no less true outside the business world.

Just wanted everyone to be aware of this.

Ralph

Thanks, Ralph -

That 67% increase in MAA membership fees will certainly affect the renewals; maybe even the prospective new members may consider the $50 fee before joining MAA.

That message on the MAA-BB has certainly caused raised eyebrows, to say the least. The messages posted have caused additional unanswered questions.

Thanks, Ralph, for telling it like it is. That's why you are respected so highly.
