one more clarification -- in my previous post I said:
-- this is the reason why doctors try to put people on prednisone and other immune system drugs like IVIG. It has been confusing because if it is an immune type disorder these drugs should improve things but for the large part, IBM has been quite resistant to these drugs and the majority of people don't improve on these drugs, so, it seems these drugs aren't worth the heavy side effects for the average IBM person. this contradiction (if it's an immune disorder why doesn't it get better on these drugs?) leaves researchers scratching their heads. Some doctors (Dalakas) have said that it could be a virus that initially triggers the immune reaction and that for some reason it then continues on but no virus has been reliably isolated from IBM patients -- one virus has shown up in about 15 patients but it seems to me that this is so low that it's probably not the culprit. |
