In 1994, I had open-heart surgery at the age of 45.
As a rule for major surgeries such as this, they will draw your own blood prior to the surgery and keep it refrigerated in case it’s needed. But in my case it happened so fast that there was no prep time before surgery.
After the procedure I had complications with excessive bleeding.
My doctor had strong reservations about giving me donor’s blood, but the decision was made and I received 1 unit.
Three years later I had routine blood work done and my CK level was off the charts. The obvious concern was that I had a heart attack. After extensive testing it was determined that my heart was doing just fine, yet my CK level remained elevated.
One specialist led to another and in September of 1998 I was diagnosed with PM and later re-diagnosed with IBM. At the time, I was asymptomatic. I felt healthy; I was athletic, and full of energy. It took between two to three more years before I began to show signs of weakness. It may have been a coincidence, but I have often wondered if I might have received some tainted blood that caused me to develop this condition.
