My husband Jim, with IBM, had some swallowing tests last week with a speech therapist which clearly showed several breakdowns in his swallowing mechanism, including aspiration and food getting hung up in two places. With the weakened muscles, his coughs are not effective and it takes a lot of effort to try to cough this up. His lungs get junky and he gets sick. It is worse when lying down. Nothing but air should be getting into the lungs. Giancarlo is right, it is a mechanical problem. We finally needed to look into this because of recurring aspiration pneumonia. I think all the mucus is created as the body tries to clear the airways and lungs. Jim will probably have to get another peg tube soon for nutrition and fluids. He had one before so we are more prepared to deal with it although hoped he would be able to eat by mouth for awhile longer. Please understand, this is just my opinion on what I'm seeing with my husband. It may be something else for another. The speech therapist was the best person to evaluate all this in conjuction with radiology and an order from a lung doctor.
