Hello Theresa in Philadelphia.

I hope you let read my messasu to your husband. It is not a message of hope because till know there isn't any valid cure for this disease. I don't think it is rettible as you say. There are more and more worse disease.
First of all I apologize for my autodidacte English. John and Diana know that and their answers are very clear and positive. Before going on think to me, born in a Valley among the mountains, and destined to die in the flat near Milano. If you can manage the site I advice you to read as many out profiles you can because each one has a differnet story, a different way to cope with this disease. If you go on on reading and posting on the board you can notice that besides IBM (or DM/PM) we have another important thing in common. A positive attitude to cope with it without thinking to give up. I am not the caregiver of myself, obviously, but what I am writing is the same could write my wife Concetta, my "Guardian Anget". In 43 years and eleven days since our marriage we have always mutually aided, we are now close to 80. When she had a surgery for an important colon cancer in 1995 was my turn. I began the downwards way of IBM not many years after and until it was possible I tried to not load a weight to my family, but in 2003 it was the last time I drove and walk. Began Concetta't turn. Since Apr 8 2004 I chose volountarily to live on my bed to don't change anything in our bedroom. I was able to sit on the border of the bed, shave, dress, eat by myself even if I couldn't rise from the bed. In Februry 2009 the abductor muscle in my right tight broke and I must give up to the evidence: from then on it would be a must to have some equipments. In fact after a month in a special centre for neuromuscular diseases when I came back home I found a power chair (my "electric chair") a ceiling lifter and an orthopedic bed.
Stop, I think I have bored you enough.
I repeat here what Jim, the founder of this site and passed away almost two years ago, wrote me : "where is a will, there is a way"
At last. If it is possible let your husband take in one of my old rules: "Of a cake one must eat both the cherry on the top and the burned on the bottom, so of the life"

All our warmest regards

Giancarlo/IBM - Italy Giancarlo ..... Call me as you want, anyway call me
