Louise, I am on SS disability and was able to get it on my 1st try. I was an Admin Asst for 16.5yrs for a municipality. Yes, having a desk job made things last longer but still having to shower, get dressed, drive, etc. all takes a toll because of the fatigue it can cause. My last straw was when I had to have 2 co-workers help me off the ADA toilet at work. I had been taken off my meds (misdiagnosis by new dr) and I went downhill quickly. Felt like I was carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders. Long story short, I'll be 63 in May; have gone from retirement disability to regular retirement (more money); am on SS disability and will qualify for Medicare in Jan 2011 because I will have been on SS disability for 2 years by then. This is 2yrs AFTER receiving my 1st check from SS, that's how they figure it. When applying for disability you just need to be thorough and consistent. It can all be done on line. My husband did have to bring my birth certificate and something else directly to the SS office, but that was all. I never had to go anywhere. Once you start the process on line you can go back into the document if you need to take a break or find more info. You have given a special # and that allows you to access your document. You can print sections off, etc. It's time consuming but very doable and beats going to their office, sitting and being waited on. Do not let anyone talk you into hiring a disability attorney; you can do this yourself.
