I, too, had a desk job although it was only part time. Everyone at work was very understanding and helpful. I ultimately had to use a walker and found it impossible to carry any paperwork that I would have to take to the copier/fax machine. My problem was that my job required evening meetings, and I found it difficult to manuever my walker in and out of the car by myself. Driving even became difficult as I could not lift my leg from the gas pedal to the brake. I did make the decision, after months of thought, and retired Dec. 2009. I am only 61 yrs. old. It was a very difficult decision for me, but I knew that it was the right thing to do. I have not driven since because my legs are too weak. I miss my job terribly - I was Clerk of my City Council for 26 yrs.
Good luck with whatever decision you make. It has to be his decision, and one he makes when he knows it's right!
