Joyce, the way I see it, the more quads we loose the more we have to compensate with our knees and hips. The knees take even more of a beating since we all tend to hyperextend that joint to a rather unhealthy level which leads to accelerated loss of cartilage.

With each step we take we are getting closer to rubbing bone on bone and yes that will hurt. I did have a number of injections to cushion the knees, when I was still walking. These days I am in a wheel chair and therefore my knees have gotten some relief.

I did not experience soreness in my glutes, so perhaps I was lucky on that point. It probably all depends on what coping mechanics we can come up with to help ourselves.

I would say that in general most of our aches and pains stem from misuse and/or overuse which is unpreventable if we want to retain some form of mobility. Yes, it stinks, but it is the price we have to pay.
