Help! 5 year old fearful of needles :-(

Previously, Grace could compose herself and hold her hands (or arm for methotrexate) out for the IV attempts.

Now, she is almost irrational (or too rational?!?) about needles. She cannot compose herself and she cannot bring herself to allow them to place the needles or give her the shot. She was held down for the first time last Friday for her shot. This Friday is our 2nd port access.

I am fearful of how poorly the procedures are going.

We worked with childlife at our local children's hospital to develop a plan, written by Grace, for how the procedures would go. The problem is that she cannot bring herself to say she is ready or to follow the part of the plan that involves the needles. I've gone back to childlife for help, but find their proposed action unacceptable (hold her down and do it quickly in the first 3-5 minutes).

Do you have any ideas for a 5 year old who cannot be distracted and has intense anxiety about needles?
