We use the LMX cream. My son is five and actually was very traumatized by the IVs. The first thing we stopped doing was using home health. They couldn't hit a vein the first time if their life depended on it. He started getting his meds at the hospital. An anesthesiologist (sp??) starts the IVs. No problems! He has actually gotten better with it. But, this is what we do during the stick....I take his face in my hands and I look right into his eyes and I start to count. I hesitate to make hime think of the next number. Sometimes we get to 35 or 40 by the time it is taped and ready to go. I hope things get better. Keep in mind that it might actually be the person placing the line rather than her. I have had IVs that I couldn't feel and I have had ones that were terribly painful. Lori |
