Sienna goes through this a lot. WE now know she has to have needles at the same place every time or she is severely traumatized. I tried the bribery route and that did not work at all. It just made me seem like a crazed mom and her more hysterical. We used the Emla the last few times she had blood drawn. But for the methotrexate we still do the pills instead of needle. We have hemmed and hawed about the needle. But none of the doctors (including Dr Rider) thought that it was necessary to give her the needle. Especially with her getting upset. So we now dissolve the pills (this way there is no powder escaping) and she takes it with no issues. If the needles are a must I would say to buy EMLA then put it on one day when she isnt getting a needle. Then poke her a few times where the emla was applied. It may help a lot. Sienna was against Emla until we went to NIH. Also a friend of ours is doing cancer treatment and he did mention the porta-cath hurts a lot more than a regular needle. He just phoned us and we told him to try EMLA as well.
