Hi Malorie,

I certainly know how you feel. Dominic has had a problem with choking since he was diagnosed. His OT says that a lot of his problem is that his drinks are pooling in the esophogus and then he chokes/coughs on it later. Sometimes it is more than a half hour later. He now uses straws whenever he drinks anything at all. When he was at his worst I would even thicken his fluids to make it easier for him to swallow them. Apparently liquids are harder to swallow as it takes more muscle involvement. The OT gave us some good ideas for thickening other than using the commercial thickener that you can buy. If you want any ideas please feel free to contact me at: susanmerrin@hotmail.com

My heart goes out to you. To this day whenever I hear Dominic cough I am checking on him to make sure that he is alright.

Once Noey is on the meds and they start working she should start to gain better control over her swallowing.

Hugs,
Susan,
Dominic's Nana
