I'm sorry to hear that your daughter is having a flare. It must be tough to keep changing the steroid dosage...for you and Ciara! I know that a lot of the kids with JM tend to flare with a virus or infection. We found that the IV form of steroids worked better for my son...and we were able to stop the oral steroids, and then taper off the IV steroids. We also felt that the IV form of steroids worked better and didn't have as many side effects...not as much weight gain, etc. His dermatomyosis seems to be in very good control right now with no steroids. Also, methotrexate (which you might already be taking)might help you reduce the steroid requirement. One more thing...I know that IV medications are much more intrusive, but we found that IVIG helped Parker a lot...and he rarely got sick. It apparently provides antibodies for your system that help fight off illnesses. And, it usually helps the dermatomyositis as well. I hope Ciara improves quickly and that she is able to get off the steroids for good! Take care, Shari Hume
